Discussion Question for Chapter One (Q1)

People can bring a source into their essays in a number of different ways depending on how they want to present it and how they want the message to come across.  It’s very common to put a source into your essay at the beginning in order to introduce your topic.  However, a more experienced writer may hold off bringing the source in until a later paragraph.  This tactic gives more power to the words you are writing.  If your state what you think and why you think that, you can reinforce your point by giving an outside source to the reader.  This helps to persuade the reader and turn their opinion into your own.  They read what you are saying so the idea is planted in their mind and then they read the source which offers “proof” that what you say is true.
Somebody may also bring in the source in the conclusion paragraph.  This method can also be very useful.  This way, the reader has already absorbed what you think and are just thinking, “Well, that’s interesting, but how do I know this is true?”  The reader then sees the source and realizes that what you say could very well be true due to the “proof."

They Say/I Say

Discussion Questions
         1)              I agree with “They Say/I Say” when it comes to how students learn to write.  Students always learn from teachers how to state what they think, explain why they think that, and tell why their views are justified.  It’s all persuasive writing.  However, there are other people’s views to consider while writing your own.  For writing to be truly effective, you need to include all these things plus why you’re saying them.  You need to give the views of the opposer to make the reader fully understand where you’re coming from with your opinion.
        2)              I believe that using and practicing writing templates does not necessarily enhance the creative abilities of the writer, but it doesn’t not affect it.  When using templates, students may develop a new style to introduce ideas or other’s ideas.  I believe that it is very important to learn how to write differently than your normal style so that your writings will be more creative.  As a creative writer, I enjoy looking at other people’s works to develop ideas of my own for writing structures.  I then mold the structure to fit my own writing.  You can easily do this with textbook templates and not hinder the creativity of your work, as you are changing the structure so it is not so uniform.
